Each winter, a temporary ice rink is installed in the forecourt of Hampton Court Palace, creating a seasonal attraction within a sensitive historic setting. Central to the success of the rink is the temporary hospitality and skate exchange structure, designed to manage large visitor numbers while enhancing comfort, safety, and commercial performance.
Our brief was to deliver temporary infrastructure that supports skate exchange, hospitality (café and warming areas), and efficient guest flow, and provide a memorable visitor experience in keeping with the palace’s historic character.
We provided our unique 25 metre x 42.5 metre back framed orangery structure, with a raised grid floor and access ramps with handrails.
The café area had a clear PVC roof for maximum natural light. Internal partitions enabled separate areas for café, skate hire, changing areas and offices.
Overall, the hospitality and skate exchange structure demonstrated how temporary architecture can successfully balance operational efficiency, visitor comfort, and heritage sensitivity. Its clean design, excellent branding and partitioned interior contributed significantly the attraction within a world heritage site.
