Fews was appointed to design, supply and build a new standalone lecture theatre for the University of Birmingham, delivering a high-specification teaching space to support the university’s growing student population.
The result, the Munrow Lecture Theatre, is a 1,200 square metre facility that combines rapid, modular-led construction with a fully bespoke academic fit-out.
The building is a Manhattan structure, chosen for its size and flexibility on a compact site adjacent to the university’s existing estate. The exterior is finished in a striking black composite envelope, with branded attica boards wrapping the top of the elevations to create a crisp, continuous parapet line and a strong contemporary identity.
Full-height glazing runs along the entrance façade, drawing natural light into the foyer and giving the building a welcoming, transparent frontage despite its bold, dark cladding. University of Birmingham branding and signage were integrated directly into the fascia, ensuring the building reads clearly as part of the wider campus estate from the moment it’s approached.
Externally, Fews installed a combination of feature staircases and DDA-compliant access ramps, ensuring the building is fully inclusive for staff, students and visitors regardless of mobility. Black powder-coated balustrades and handrails were used throughout to tie the external circulation routes visually into the building’s overall black-and-charcoal palette.
Inside, Fews delivered a full fit-out of the raked lecture theatre, including tiered seating for several hundred students upholstered in the university’s colour palette of yellow, grey and stone. A suspended grid ceiling houses an extensive array of LED lighting and air handling units, ensuring even illumination and climate control across the full depth of the auditorium. At the front of the space, three large-format digital display screens and an additional presentation monitor were installed, giving lecturing staff flexible, high-impact AV capability for teaching, signage and wayfinding information.
The completed Munrow Lecture Theatre gives the University of Birmingham a standalone, purpose-built teaching venue that is both operationally efficient and visually distinctive on campus. By combining a fast-track modular Manhattan-frame structure with a fully considered architectural envelope, inclusive access provision and a comprehensive AV and seating fit-out, Fews delivered a turnkey facility ready for immediate academic use.
